2017 Sofi Award Winner for Best Charcuterie

April 20, 2017 – Volpi Culatello Prosciutto has been awarded the coveted sofi Silver Award in Meats, Poultry, Charcuterie by the Specialty Food Association’s 2017 sofi™ Awards committee.

The Sofi award is the top honor in the $127 billion specialty food industry. “sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation and represents the best of the best from members of the Specialty Food Association.

The Culatello Prosciutto was one of 154 Winners selected by a national panel of 62 specialty food experts from 3,000 entries across 39 categories. Every entry is carefully assessed by passionate and knowledgeable food professionals including chefs, culinary experts, academics, food writers, and category buyers. Products are judged on taste, including appearance, texture and aroma, as well as ingredient quality. All tastings are blind.

“We are honored that Culatello Prosciutto has won a coveted sofi Award,” says Lorenza Pasetti, President and CEO of Volpi Foods. “As passionate entrepreneurs focused on quality foods, we need to know that our products are loved and appreciated. This is one of the ultimate stamps of approval, and we are very grateful for having been chosen.”

“A sofi means a product, and the people behind it, have arrived,” says Phil Kafarakis, president, Specialty Food Association. “This year’s winners represent a devotion to excellence and innovation in specialty food that continues to fuel our industry, excite consumers and expand retail offerings around the world.”

The sofi Awards are open to members of the Specialty Food Association, a not-for-profit trade association established in 1952 for food artisans, importers and entrepreneurs with more than 3,400 members in the U.S. and abroad. About VOLPI FOODS

Volpi Foods was founded in 1902 by John Volpi after leaving Milan, Italy to bring his craft to a little St. Louis neighborhood known as The Hill. As demand grew, he recruited his nephew, Armando Pasetti, from Italy to become his apprentice and eventually the new master salumiere. In 2002, exactly 100 years after John Volpi opened his business, Armando passed the torch to his daughter, Lorenza, who continues to refine her great-uncle’s craft – while adhering to the techniques he brought with him to America more than a century ago.

Keeping with these time-honored techniques and using only the freshest local ingredients, Volpi’s Culatello Prosciutto is cured naturally using time, not artificial processes. Known as the “King of Prosciutto” and made from only premium cut loin, this artisan prosciutto is massaged with sea salt, hand-tied & air dried for a perfect melt-in-your-mouth texture. By allowing airflow and subtle changes in humidity and temperature to dry it to its most flavorful point over the course of 8 months, Volpi’s experienced craftsmen are able to achieve an unparalleled tenderness and a more subtle flavor. More delicate in flavor than traditional prosciutto, Volpi Culatello has been selected as representing the best of what the specialty food industry has to offer.

Volpi crafts food with care and is honored to be recognized as an ambassador for the industry. It is the only Midwestern specialty foods company that makes its own dry-cured meats, letting nature perfect each flavor in its family’s authentic recipes. There are no shortcuts or artificial processes that can achieve the premium quality and taste of Volpi products. Volpi is mindful of what goes into its foods so that you can feel good about eating them. Volpi uses only fresh, hormone free meats from the Midwest, and its spices are sourced from around the world.

Volpi will be at the Summer Fancy Food Show (June 25-27) in the Javits Center in New York. Visit booth 665 and taste for yourself the award winning Culatello. You can also find Volpi at the Winter Fancy Food Show (January 21-23) in San Francisco. Or feel free to stop by Volpi’s newly remodeled retail store on The Hill in St. Louis, and see where it all started in 1902. Volpi takes pride in improving on its traditions, continually offering unique twists on the classic specialty foods, and this latest award shows that consumers appreciate the efforts.
